Gävle region has been rewarded as the winner of the”Geospatial World Leadership Award 2013- Gävle- Geospatial Business Hub”, which is one of the world’s top prices for development in geographic information systems (GIS).
Gävle region are being recognized for its long-term and sustainable work in research and development (innovations) of geographic information, which has created a world-leading expertise in the area in the region. The strong concentration of expertise in geographic information technology in the region, close cooperation between government, industry and research in the application and development of geographic information and a persistent work of one of Europe’s most awarded clusters Future Position X has made Gävle as European capital of GIS.
Johan P Bång, CEO of Future Position X (FPX) and Daniel Olsson, Mayor of Gävle received the award at the ceremony of Geospatial World Forum in Geneva on Thursday evening (8th May 2014).
- This is a patient work that paid off. There are many actors who have contributed to this, such as ESRI, Lantmäteriet (National Land Survey), Tillväxtverket, Vinnova, Future Position X, Region Gävleborg and the municipality, says Daniel Olsson, Mayor of Gävle.
The region has unique and close cooperation between many actors. The partnership has set the stage for developments that led to new innovations in GIS, which now rewarded.
- The price strengthens and confirms our position as GIS experts and developers, says Daniel.
- “Persistently pursue ” has been a motto which is part of the development for the world’s best GIS city –Gävle, since it began formally in Gävle at the millennium. Today we can see the early results, as such new businesses started , international companies establishing themselves here and new innovations created in collaboration between our regional actors, says Johan P Bång, CEO of FPX .

The Geospatial World Leadership Awards were constituted in 2007 on the occasion of the first Geospatial World Forum to honour and recognise leadership in various geospatial domains. Over the past years the awards have evolved with an independent process of nomination and selection, which is done by an external panel of experts, who after deliberations among themselves, choose the winners. The award consists of a trophy and a citation that presented during the Awards Evening on 8th May in Geneva.

”Gävle and the Gävleborg region, in Sweden, has developed into the GIS capital of Europe over the past 15 years, with a world-leading GIS industry and research competence. The Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority has its headquarters in Gävle, and the region has developed into an international centre for geospatial research and education in recent years. Companies such as ESRI, Metria and Swedesurvey have headquarters in Gävle, and this concentration of GIS knowledge and expertise has led regional authorities, municipal organisations and companies to become competent GIS-users to successfully improve their operations and processes.”
